HVS students visited the Guardian Education Centre and gained some authentic work-related learning in the professional international news setting. They managed breaking news stories as they happen.
Students in both year groups are studying media and non-fiction texts and the experience deepens their understanding of the conventions associated with front-page news.
Students made decisions about their 5 top stories, wrote and edited their own and each other’s copy and headlines as well as choosing pictures to grab a reader’s attention.
They had to edit their stories as updates to the live stories came in over lunch. Some even swapped out their lead stories due to breaking news.
