Earthquake to hit HVS at 2.00pm

Posted on 12/12/2017 by Tracy Wright

Can Year 7 survive the earthquake due to hit at 2.00pm?

Stage 1 – Response planning

Students worked in groups to plan the response to the disaster. They were given some options about appropriate responses and needed to decide which were the right and wrong things to do. They were then asked to prioritise their actions. They then worked in smaller groups with each group focussing on one of the priorities. They then needed to plan the logistics of enacting this priority. For example, how can we ensure the survivors of the HVS earthquake have enough clean water?

Stage 2 – Shelter building

Students were asked to work in small teams to produce earthquake proof buildings for the students and staff of HVS to use. In small groups they spent the first part of the session researching and planning earthquake proof buildings.  They then used the resources available to build their own earthquake proof buildings. Teachers applied shake test, best buildings get house points.

Stage 3 – Did HVS survive the earthquake?

Each team of students produced a brief presentation explaining what their shelter was like and what they believed the priorities would have been in terms of planning the response.

CONGRATULATIONS TO YEAR 7 – HVS SURVIVED
